A new version of Robin Hood tells how the famous English hero became the outlaw who robbed the rich to help the poor. The 10-episode series will start streaming on November 2.
Australian actor Jack Patten, 28, plays “Rob,” the son of a Saxon forester and a skilled archer. The story shows how he turns into a rebel after facing great loss and injustice. At the London premiere on Tuesday, Patten said he didn’t feel pressure from older versions of the story. “I’d heard of Robin Hood, but I’d never seen it,” he said. “Every generation deserves a Robin Hood, and we get to be this generation’s version.”
The show takes place in 12th-century England, after the Norman invasion. It also follows Rob’s love story with Marian (played by Lauren McQueen), the daughter of a Norman lord who now lives in Rob’s family home.
The series creators, John Glenn and Jonathan English, said they wanted to tell a more real and emotional version of Robin Hood’s story. “We wanted to show how Robin becomes an outlaw and what happens to his family,” said English. “It’s about class and the Norman conquest. Robin helping the poor is really about class, which makes the story still important today.”
The cast also includes Sean Bean as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Connie Nielsen as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine.
With its mix of history, action, and emotion, Robin Hood brings a fresh and modern take on the timeless legend.
