During a significant gathering at the seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) in Nairobi, Kenya, on December 11-12, Vice Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Eng. Mansour Hilal Almushaiti, stressed the importance of global partnership in addressing environmental issues and forging sustainable pathways for a resilient future. The assembly's theme was “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet.”
Almushaiti articulated that Saudi Arabia employs a cohesive strategy towards environmental sustainability, focusing on resource management, combating desertification, conserving biodiversity, lowering carbon emissions, and enhancing a circular economy to boost resource efficiency and recycling efforts.
He underscored the Kingdom’s dedication to forging collaborations both regionally and worldwide, promoting knowledge sharing, and leveraging technology and innovation to bolster the Sustainable Development Goals, aligning with Saudi Vision 2030. Additionally, Almushaiti highlighted Saudi Arabia’s role in coinciding international events like World Environment Day, the One Water Summit, and COP16, which initiated programs targeting the reduction of land degradation and drought repercussions.
Among notable achievements are the rehabilitation of exceeding 500,000 hectares of degraded land and the planting of over 151 million trees as part of the Saudi Green Initiative, along with continued efforts on the Middle East Green Initiative involving 30 nations. Such projects aim to safeguard the environment, mitigate land degradation, and assure sustainable natural resources.
Almushaiti reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to bolster collaborative environmental efforts and endorse global initiatives, including the Global Water Organization and the Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership, aiming to foster global cooperation in environmental protection and drought management.
