Dubai: A 28-year-old Saudi national was arrested last Sunday after allegedly assaulting two flight attendants aboard SriLankan Airlines flight UL266, which was traveling from Riyadh to Colombo. The incident took place as the aircraft prepared to land at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) at 6:32 am on October 26.
According to police reports, the passenger, who was en route to Malaysia via Colombo, attempted to use the lavatory while the plane was preparing for landing — a critical time when passengers are required to fasten their seat belts. Cabin crew members intervened, instructing the man to return to his seat. The passenger allegedly reacted aggressively, physically assaulting two flight attendants in the process.
The pilot promptly alerted ground authorities, leading to the immediate detention of the suspect by airport police upon landing. A video circulating on social media captured the tense confrontation inside the aircraft cabin, showing crew members and passengers struggling to restrain the man during the flight’s descent.
The Katunayake Airport Police and Airport Tourist Police have launched a joint investigation into the incident. Since the altercation occurred within Sri Lankan airspace, the suspect will be produced before Colombo Magistrate’s Court No. 01 this Sunday.
This incident highlights the importance of maintaining discipline on board flights, especially during critical phases like landing. Airlines worldwide are increasingly taking strict actions to ensure the safety and security of cabin crew and passengers.
