3.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Shimla Residents

3.2 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Shimla Residents

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Shimla, October 31: Early Friday morning, Shimla, the picturesque capital of Himachal Pradesh, experienced light tremors that startled residents across the city. According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake registered 3.2 on the Richter scale, with its epicenter located about 10 kilometers beneath the city.

The tremor occurred at 7:02 am, shaking homes and prompting people in several areas to rush outdoors in fear. While no injuries or structural damage have been reported so far, the sudden quake created a brief moment of panic, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods.

Residents of Lakkar Bazaar, Summer Hill, and Chhota Shimla reported feeling the ground shake for a few seconds, with furniture and window panes rattling noticeably. Many shared their experiences on social media, describing the jolt as “short but strong enough to notice.”

Though minor in intensity, this tremor is a reminder of Shimla’s location in a seismically active Himalayan zone, where low to moderate earthquakes are not uncommon. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged citizens to remain calm and stay alert for any potential aftershocks.

Experts also advised residents to secure heavy furniture and remain aware of emergency procedures in case of stronger seismic events in the future.

Shimla’s light earthquake has sparked discussions on social media about the city’s preparedness for seismic activity, emphasizing the importance of awareness and safety measures in hilly regions.

This incident underscores the need for continued vigilance in earthquake-prone areas like Shimla, where residents are encouraged to follow safety protocols during seismic events
