Weight management can be more complex than simply reducing calories and increasing physical activity. Many individuals commit to daily exercise, make nutritious choices, and yet fail to achieve their desired results. Dr. Sanjay Bhojraj, a seasoned cardiologist and functional medicine expert, suggests that inadequate sleep may be a significant factor.
Initially, Dr. Bhojraj believed that healthy eating, regular cardiovascular activities, strength training, and calorie tracking were sufficient for weight loss. He adhered to these principles personally and encouraged his patients to do the same. However, many reported weight gain or fatigue despite their efforts, prompting him to investigate further.
According to him, weight loss isn’t solely dependent on diet and exercise—it also involves metabolic inflammation. This condition arises from prolonged bodily stress, with poor sleep identified as a primary contributor. Disturbed slumber elevates cortisol levels—the body’s stress hormone—while insulin production also surges. When these hormones remain elevated, the body tends to store fat, hindering weight loss efforts.
Even seemingly healthy processed foods and everyday emotional pressures can exacerbate these issues, leaving the body fatigued, slowing metabolism, and promoting fat retention. Dr. Bhojraj asserts that simply eating less cannot resolve this imbalance; adequate rest is crucial for the body to heal, optimize digestion, and metabolize fats properly.
In light of these insights, he adjusted his treatment strategies. He urged patients to prioritize better sleep habits, recommend relaxing bedtime routines, limit screen exposure pre-sleep, and ensure they get sufficient rest to awaken feeling refreshed. He also suggested engaging in light morning activities such as stretching or walking to naturally energize the body.
As patients improved their sleep and reduced stress, Dr. Bhojraj observed enhancements in their heart health. Over around 12 weeks, many individuals lost up to 35 pounds of stubborn fat, experienced lower blood pressure, and reported increased vitality.
His key takeaway is clear: For individuals aiming for a long life and a healthy weight, prioritizing sleep is essential. Quality rest is not merely a luxury; it is a vital health component, equally important as a balanced diet and regular exercise.
This article aims to enhance readers’ understanding of their health, but it should not substitute for medical care. Those facing health issues should consult their physician for tailored advice.
