The likely date for Thailand’s next general election is March 29, 2025, according to senior government officials. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has said he plans to dissolve parliament by the end of January 2025, with the general election to follow in late March or early April. The Election Commission and the government have agreed that March 29 is the most probable date for the election, though the commission has yet to announce it officially.
Alongside the election, two important referendums will likely take place. One will be on adopting a new constitution, while the other will decide whether to revoke two agreements related to border demarcation with Cambodia. These votes are expected to happen on the same day as the election.
The election and referendums are expected to cost around 9 billion baht (approximately $274.81 million). About 53 million Thai citizens will be eligible to vote.
Anutin became Thailand’s third prime minister since August 2023 after winning a parliamentary vote in early September. This came after his Bhumjaithai party left the previous ruling coalition headed by the Pheu Thai party. To gain the support needed to form a government, Anutin secured backing from the largest group in parliament, the opposition People’s Party. The People’s Party demanded that an election be held within four months of Anutin taking office, alongside a referendum on a new constitution.
This upcoming election marks an important political moment for Thailand, potentially reshaping the country’s government and its future direction after a period of political shifts since 2023. The synchronized election and referendums will allow citizens to vote both for their representatives and on critical national issues related to the constitution and international borders.
