US President Donald Trump has given his support to a bipartisan Russia Sanctions Bill that aims to punish countries purchasing Russian oil, including major economies such as India, China, and Brazil. This bill, introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, could impose tariffs as high as 500% on nations knowingly importing oil, uranium, gas, and other exports from Russia.
The purpose of this legislation is to cut off the financial resources that fund Russia’s ongoing military operations, especially amid the conflict sparked by Russia's invasion of Ukraine nearly four years ago. The sanctions package is designed to exert strong economic pressure on Moscow, potentially crippling its ability to sustain the war effort.
Senator Graham recently met with President Trump at the White House, where the President expressed his endorsement of the bill, which has been under discussion for several months. A White House official also confirmed the support during conversations with media agencies.
Graham stated that the timing for these sanctions could not be better, as Ukraine appears to be making concessions in pursuit of peace, while Russian President Vladimir Putin continues aggressive military actions. He added that a vote on the bill could happen as soon as next week, although the exact timeline remains uncertain due to other Senate priorities, including government funding discussions and an upcoming recess.
The sanctions bill would grant the US President authority to impose steep tariffs and secondary sanctions, effectively penalizing countries that enable Russia’s war economy through their trade. Though the White House had previously requested some flexibility in the sanctions' implementation, it is unclear if any adjustments were made before Trump’s approval.
This legislation has garnered significant bipartisan support in the Senate, with numerous co-sponsors, and there is a corresponding bill introduced in the House of Representatives by Republican Brian Fitzpatrick.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues efforts to broker a peace agreement to end the conflict in Ukraine, with key negotiators including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, working to find a resolution.
