Pyongyang, North Korea: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was photographed test-firing handguns with his teenage daughter Ju Ae during a recent visit to a state munitions factory, state media reported on March 12. The released photos show the pair inspecting weapons and participating in a shooting drill alongside military officials.
The visit, covered by the North Korean state news agency KCNA, highlighted the munitions factory’s role in strengthening the country’s defense industrial base. Kim stressed the importance of modernizing weapons production and expanding capacity to improve the “combat efficiency” of the Korean People’s Army.
In the images, both Kim and Ju Ae wear dark clothing as they handle pistols and observe production lines. State media described the factory as a vital facility overseeing the manufacture and testing of small arms and ammunition.
Ju Ae’s presence alongside her father has fueled speculation about her potential future leadership role. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) suggested last month that she may be “internally appointed” as a possible successor, having been seen providing input on certain policy matters.
These photographs follow earlier coverage of Kim inspecting other military programs, including a strategic cruise missile test from a newly commissioned naval destroyer — part of Pyongyang’s effort to showcase its military capabilities amid high regional tensions.
Analysts note that such public appearances serve dual purposes: reinforcing Kim’s image as the nation’s military leader while introducing Ju Ae to defense-related duties in preparation for possible future leadership responsibilities.
