Two Indian Tourists Jailed in Singapore for Robbing Sex Workers

Two Indian Tourists Jailed in Singapore for Robbing Sex Workers

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Two Indian tourists have been sentenced to prison and caning in Singapore after robbing and assaulting sex workers in hotel rooms during their vacation. Arokkiyasami Daison, 23, and Rajendran Mayilarasan, 27, were each given five years and one month in prison along with 12 strokes of the cane, after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery.

The court heard that the men arrived in Singapore from India on April 24. Two days later, while walking in Little India, they were approached by a man who offered them contact details of sex workers. Facing financial difficulties, Arokkiyasami suggested robbing the women, and Rajendran agreed.

The first robbery took place around 6 pm, when they lured a woman to a hotel room. They tied her hands and legs, slapped her, and stole SGD 2,000 in cash, jewellery, her passport, and bank cards. Later that night, they arranged to meet a second woman in another hotel room, dragged her inside, covered her mouth to stop her from screaming, and stole SGD 800, two mobile phones, and her passport.

The police were alerted after the second victim confided in another man the following day. During mitigation, both men pleaded for leniency, citing personal hardships. Arokkiyasami mentioned the death of his father and financial struggles supporting three sisters, while Rajendran highlighted the difficulties his wife and child face back in India.

Under Singapore law, those who voluntarily cause hurt during a robbery can face 5 to 20 years in prison and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, depending on the severity of the crime.
