In response to the catastrophic flooding that has impacted various regions of Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates initiated a humanitarian aid operation. These severe floods have tragically resulted in over 355 fatalities and affected more than a million individuals, damaging countless homes. In a timely response, the UAE dispatched specialized search-and-rescue personnel along with over 20 tonnes of urgent relief supplies to the most severely hit locations.
Coordinated by the Joint Operations Command, this mission includes contributions from the UAE Aid Agency, Emirates Red Crescent Authority, and Abu Dhabi Civil Defense. Their teams are actively engaging with the most vulnerable communities, providing food, vital shelter materials, and additional emergency resources to those impacted by the floods and landslides.
This initiative underscores the UAE’s ongoing dedication to upholding international humanitarian efforts. By delivering a swift and extensive aid response, the UAE aims to bolster the Sri Lankan government’s endeavors in restoring stabilization, alleviating hardship, and facilitating early recovery. In the wake of the floods, essential services have been disrupted, leaving numerous households without access to clean water, food, or basic necessities.
Dr. Hamdan bin Musallam Al Mazrouei, Chairman of Emirates Red Crescent Authority, stressed the UAE’s vital role in global disaster relief operations. He pointed out the urgency of rapid emergency responses, skilled team deployments, and programs designed to alleviate the impacts of natural disasters, using the recent flooding in Sri Lanka as a pertinent example.
Dr. Tareq Ahmed Al Ameri, Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, reaffirmed the UAE’s unwavering commitment to its global humanitarian responsibilities. He indicated that more emergency supplies and shelter materials are on the way to expedite relief efforts, assisting affected families and promoting early recovery.
The UAE’s activities in Sri Lanka also encompass logistical coordination to reach remote areas, medical aid for the injured, and the distribution of essential relief items to ensure survival and protection of those affected. This mission exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to delivering timely assistance to international communities facing natural disasters, aimed at reducing distress and enhancing resilience during crises.
With this comprehensive intervention, the UAE reaffirms its position as a frontrunner in global humanitarian aid. By leveraging resources, expertise, and prompt deployment capabilities, the nation ensures that those affected by the floods in Sri Lanka receive immediate support, cultivating hope and stability amid one of the country’s most challenging periods.
