Traveling to new destinations is thrilling, yet few realize the potential impact of air travel on our bodies, particularly the heart. Cardiologist Dr. Dmitry Yaranov offers valuable recommendations to safeguard heart health during flights, highlighting easy strategies for a safer and more enjoyable journey.
While many feel that hours spent seated on a plane pose no harm, Dr. Yaranov points out that air travel places additional strain on the heart due to changes in cabin air pressure and quality. The heart responds to these shifts, and travelers might experience subtle but significant bodily changes.
As the aircraft ascends and cabin pressure drops, the available oxygen decreases. Consequently, the heart must exert more effort to ensure oxygen reaches all body parts. Additionally, the cabin air is drier compared to ground level, leading to more rapid moisture loss. Dehydration may result in fatigue, dizziness, or a general sense of malaise.
Sitting still for extended periods can further impede blood circulation, leading to swollen, heavy legs and potentially increasing the risk of blood clots, particularly in older adults or those with pre-existing heart conditions. Dr. Yaranov notes that as hydration levels drop, blood thickens, complicating its circulation through the body.
Moreover, the “jet lag” sensation that many experience isn't solely due to shifting time zones. It also stems from factors like diminished oxygen, dehydration, and sluggish circulation within the body.
To maintain well-being during flights, Dr. Yaranov advocates for several simple yet effective habits. Above all, staying hydrated is paramount. He stresses that travelers should consume water proactively before and throughout their journey, rather than awaiting signs of thirst, as proper hydration bolsters heart function and blood flow.
He also recommends steering clear of salty snacks and alcohol during flights, as both can thicken the blood and heighten dehydration risks. Alcohol may disrupt sleep, exacerbating jet lag effects.
A further beneficial routine is to rise and stretch at least once every hour. Even small physical movements promote blood circulation and reduce swelling. If walking isn't feasible, simple ankle movements can be performed while seated.
Dr. Yaranov suggests employing a saline nasal spray prior to takeoff, which keeps nasal passages humid and enhances defense against cabin germs. Upon arrival, taking a few moments to walk around can help restore normal blood flow and aid acclimatization to changing oxygen levels.
“Small actions can lead to significant results,” Dr. Yaranov emphasizes. “Your heart travels with you; ensure to treat it well.” His advice underscores the importance of minor adjustments during flights to safeguard heart and overall well-being.
Experts generally agree that healthy individuals need not be overly concerned about flying; however, those with heart diseases, hypertension, or respiratory issues should consult their healthcare provider before embarking on long journeys. Simple measures, including hydration, minimizing alcohol intake, and regular movement, can mitigate numerous travel-related health risks.
