A massive fire broke out at Bulbul Bagh near Tengpora Bridge in Srinagar, causing extensive damage to a showroom-cum-godown and dozens of nearby residential sheds. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly 30 hours before finally bringing it under control, officials said.
The State Fire Control Room received the emergency call, and Fire & Emergency Services teams were immediately dispatched, with the first unit arriving within minutes.
The fire engulfed a U-shaped, double-storey showroom-cum-godown, built with a combination of pucca wooden structures and GCI sheets. The premises were being used by New Express Jammu, Prevegia Logistics, and Chamba Manali Transport Company from Chandigarh. The warehouse stored large quantities of various items including cosmetics, paint thinner, hardware goods, groceries, medicines, kitchenware, blankets, tyres, carry bags, and other materials.
The fire quickly spread to 37 nearby residential sheds made of wooden structures, tarpaulin, and GCI sheets, which also contained scrap materials. The showroom and godown, along with all flooring and furnishing items like carpets and curtains, were severely damaged.
All 37 residential sheds and the household goods inside were completely destroyed, while the transport company’s wooden structure suffered partial damage.
Several stored items, including paint thinner, medicines, groceries, hardware, blankets, and carry bags, were lost in the fire. Additionally, a motorcycle with registration number JK05F-9233 was damaged.
The firefighting operation was led by Deputy Director of Fire and Emergency Services, Dr. Mir Aqib Hussain, and Mobilising Officer Aijaz Ahmad Shah, under the direct supervision of ADGP Fire and Emergency Services Alok Kumar.
During the rescue efforts, a fire tender from Rawalpora Fire Station was damaged when its front windshield was reportedly broken by locals as it arrived at the scene.
