A viral video allegedly from Pakistan is drawing widespread attention online after a street food vendor was seen cooking food using extremely dark cooking oil, sparking fresh debate over food hygiene and public health concerns.
The clip, which has rapidly circulated across social media platforms, shows the vendor preparing food in oil that appeared heavily reused and visibly blackened. Many users reacted with concern over the possible health risks linked to repeatedly heated cooking oil.
While the exact location, date and full context of the viral video have not been independently verified, the footage has intensified discussions around food safety standards followed by some street food sellers.
Health experts and food safety authorities have long warned that repeatedly reused cooking oil can release harmful compounds and may increase health risks if consumed regularly. Darkened oil is often considered a sign of excessive reuse and overheating.
According to guidelines issued by India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), cooking oil with Total Polar Compounds exceeding 25 percent should be discarded and treated as hazardous waste. Such oil is considered unsafe for further food preparation.
The viral clip has also triggered calls online for stricter inspections and stronger hygiene monitoring of roadside food stalls to ensure safer cooking practices and protect public health.
Street food remains a major part of daily life across South Asia due to its affordability and popularity, but incidents involving questionable hygiene often generate concern among consumers and health officials alike.
Authorities in several countries have previously launched awareness campaigns advising vendors to avoid excessive oil reuse and maintain proper food safety standards while preparing meals for the public.
