Changi Among Top Carbon-Heavy Airports

Changi Among Top Carbon-Heavy Airports

Post by : Shakul

Singapore Changi Airport has been ranked among the world’s most carbon-intensive airports in a new international report focused on aviation emissions and environmental sustainability.

According to the 2026 Airport Tracker published by Transport & Environment and ODI Global, Changi Airport ranked ninth globally after generating around 14.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in 2023.

The report analyzed nearly 1,300 airports worldwide using aviation emissions data collected from the International Council on Clean Transportation.

Researchers said the Asia-Pacific region has now become the largest contributor to aviation-related carbon emissions, accounting for nearly 32 percent of global aviation CO2 emissions.

Transport & Environment regional director Jude Lee stated that transparent emissions reporting will become increasingly important as Singapore aims to strengthen its role in sustainable aviation and green finance.

The report also found that the top 100 airports in the world were responsible for nearly two-thirds of passenger flight emissions, raising concerns about the environmental impact of major aviation hubs.

Experts warned that international pressure on airports could increase further as the European Union considers expanding carbon pricing rules to cover all international departing flights.

The study noted that only a very small number of airports currently have credible long-term net-zero emissions plans covering indirect aviation emissions.
