WestJet Airlines is steadily progressing towards welcoming its inaugural Boeing 737 MAX 10 by the end of 2026. CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech shared insights on Boeing's advancements in addressing technical challenges and securing approvals from U.S. aviation regulators. This ensures WestJet's confidence in timely certification and delivery.
As one of the initial airlines poised to receive the MAX 10, WestJet has noted that both the MAX 7 and MAX 10 variants are expected to achieve certification in 2026. Boeing is actively working on resolving a vital engine anti-ice system issue, which could jeopardize engine performance if left unaddressed. With these improvements, WestJet feels optimistic about Boeing's trajectory. The CEO emphasized that the airline anticipates the first MAX 10 during the final quarter of 2026, provided everything proceeds smoothly.
In the event of further delays from Boeing, WestJet is ready to adapt, having the option to pivot to smaller MAX 8 aircraft to maintain uninterrupted operations.
Alongside aircraft developments, WestJet is revising its operational approach, diverting more flights away from the U.S. market to prioritize services in South America and Europe. This pivot aligns with a notable drop in travel between Canada and the U.S., influenced by recent trade strains. According to Statistics Canada, reports indicate a 3.9% increase in air travel from Canada to various international locations in September 2025, while returns from the U.S. saw a significant decrease of 27.1%.
To cater to shifting traveler demands, WestJet has unveiled new seasonal international routes, including direct flights from Toronto and Halifax to exciting new locations. Notably, a new service to Medellin, Colombia, will mark WestJet's inaugural direct engagement with South America. This route expansion is aimed at drawing international tourists and bolstering tourism across various sectors.
As the second-largest airline in Canada, WestJet's strategic decisions will significantly influence the country's travel landscape moving forward. With plans for new aircraft and additional routes, the airline is set to accommodate the evolving preferences of travelers exploring options beyond the U.S.
