Mayor Scott Gillingham led a poignant menorah lighting ceremony at City Hall, joined by local Jewish leaders and community members, as a gesture of support following the tragic Hanukkah attack in Sydney, Australia, which resulted in the loss of 15 lives, including a young child and a Holocaust survivor. This solemn event unfolded against the backdrop of mourning shared by communities globally.
Addressing the crowd of about 40, Mayor Gillingham remarked, “There’s no place for hate or terror in our world. We stand with you.” He underscored the necessity of solidarity in such harrowing times, advocating for an environment where fear does not overshadow communal celebrations. Enhanced security was evident during the outdoor ceremony, with police present to safeguard attendees.
Jewish leaders emphasized the importance of public displays of unity like this menorah lighting, especially in light of rising antisemitic incidents. Rob Waldman, president of Chevra Mishnayes Synagogue, noted how personal celebrations have evolved in response to security apprehensions. “To combat antisemitism, we need to embrace our Jewish identities and stand united,” he affirmed. “I feel a deep connection to the events that transpired at Bondi Beach, making this gathering incredibly important.”
Dan Petrenko, from the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, echoed these thoughts, stating that such gatherings bolster community spirit and resilience. “This is how we bring light into our lives,” he declared, stressing the need to overcome fear and continue cultural celebrations.
Gustavo Zentner, vice-president of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs in Manitoba, called for more than mere words of sympathy, urging tangible steps from authorities to ensure proper recognition and protection of the Jewish community.
In closing, Mayor Gillingham reflected on the powerful symbolism of Hanukkah. “Light over darkness matters. May this menorah serve as a source of comfort, strength, and hope for all of us.” By coming together to honor this festival of lights, Winnipeg’s Jewish community and civic leaders conveyed a strong message: hate and terror will not conquer their spirit.
