This November 14 marks World Diabetes Day 2025, a critical occasion where healthcare professionals in New Delhi emphasized that diabetes extends beyond just elevated blood sugar levels. Its repercussions infiltrate various bodily systems, impacting hormones, bones, skin, and even hair health. The day serves as a clarion call for individuals to recognize their risks and take proactive measures.
The theme for this year, “Know Your Risk, Know Your Response,” advocates for a deeper understanding of diabetes and its internal workings. Medical professionals assert that increased awareness is crucial for effective disease management.
Experts from various medical fields elaborated on the often-overlooked consequences of diabetes.
Dr. Shobha Gupta, an IVF specialist, noted that diabetes disrupts hormonal balance in women, particularly affecting those in their 30s and 40s who may experience irregular cycles, PCOS, and fertility challenges due to insulin resistance. She emphasized the importance of lifestyle adjustments, timely screenings, and heightened awareness to prevent chronic conditions.
Orthopaedic specialist Dr. Abhishek Vaish pointed out that diabetes compromises bone and joint integrity. Many patients remain unaware that high glucose levels can diminish bone health, increasing the risk of fractures. He advised that routine examinations and effective glucose management are essential for maintaining bone strength.
In terms of dermatological concerns, cosmetologist Dr. Karuna Malhotra stated that diabetes can manifest through skin and hair issues. Symptoms such as dark patches on the neck, acne, and lackluster skin may hint at insulin resistance. While external treatments can offer some relief, she insisted that correcting internal imbalances is vital for long-term solutions.
Healthcare professionals reiterated the insidious nature of diabetes, highlighting its detrimental effects on organs including the heart, kidneys, nerves, hormones, bones, and skin. Consequently, early detection, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and routine medical consultations are paramount.
World Diabetes Day serves as a timely reminder that individuals must pay attention to early warning signs. Through education and prompt intervention, many grave health complications can potentially be averted.
