A 24-year-old worker from Bihar died after a copper melting furnace exploded at Jain Metal Group’s copper scrap recycling unit located in the SIPCOT Industrial Estate, Gummidipoondi, in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district on Tuesday.
Five other workers were injured in the incident and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The deceased worker was identified as Ravi Ranjan, a 24-year-old native of Bihar. Police said he suffered serious injuries in the explosion and died while he was being taken to the government hospital in Gummidipoondi.
The injured workers have been identified as Ranjith Kumar, Prince Kumar, Om Kumar, Raja Babu, and Om Prakash. All five workers are also from Bihar and were working at the copper recycling facility.
According to police officials, the accident took place when a furnace used for melting copper materials exploded due to excessive heat during regular operations.
Following the explosion, company employees, along with Fire and Rescue Services personnel and police teams, reached the spot and started rescue operations.
The injured workers were immediately shifted to the government hospital in Gummidipoondi for medical care. While Ravi Ranjan could not survive his injuries, the remaining five workers are undergoing treatment.
Police said a case has been registered based on a complaint received from the workers. Further investigation into the cause of the furnace explosion and other details related to the incident is underway.
