Erik ten Hag Warns Manchester United Face Real Relegation Risk

Erik ten Hag Warns Manchester United Face Real Relegation Risk

Post by : Rohit Dhiman

Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has warned that the club could face the serious possibility of relegation from the Premier League, following a difficult run of results that has pushed the English football giant dangerously close to the bottom of the standings. United's situation has become increasingly concerning after their 2-0 defeat against Chelsea on Saturday. The result left the club in 17th place, just above the relegation zone, with their position offering little room for comfort as the competition continues. Speaking about the club's struggles, ten Hag highlighted the strength of the Premier League and explained why even established teams with experienced managers can find themselves in difficult situations. According to the Dutch manager, relegation cannot be ruled out when a team becomes trapped in a prolonged cycle of poor performances and disappointing results. The former United boss believes the competition is so demanding that any team can experience a difficult period capable of threatening its position in the league.

Manchester United Drop to 17th After Chelsea Defeat

Manchester United's 2-0 loss to Chelsea has further intensified concerns about their position in the Premier League table. The club currently have seven points from nine matches and sit 17th in the standings. They are above Crystal Palace, who occupy the final relegation position, only because of their superior goal difference. The situation represents a worrying development for a club that has traditionally competed among the leading sides in English football. United's recent performances have also highlighted the scale of their problems. According to data from Opta, the team have gone nine consecutive matches without a victory, marking their longest winless run since 1984. A prolonged period without winning has placed additional pressure on the club, with every upcoming fixture becoming increasingly important to their efforts to move away from the bottom of the table.

Premier League Relegation Is a Real Possibility, Says Ten Hag

Ten Hag was asked about the possibility of Manchester United suffering relegation for the first time in more than half a century. The Dutchman acknowledged that such an outcome was possible because of the competitive nature of English football. He explained that the Premier League features strong teams and capable managers across the competition, making it difficult for clubs to recover quickly once they enter a negative cycle. According to ten Hag, a team that begins losing matches can find itself caught in a difficult situation where confidence, results and performances become increasingly challenging to improve. His comments underline the unpredictable nature of the Premier League, where even clubs with significant history and resources can face unexpected challenges.

Michael Carrick Continues as Manchester United Manager

Despite the team's recent disappointing performances, the Manchester United board decided to retain current manager Michael Carrick ahead of the Chelsea fixture. The decision came after a difficult period that included a 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth and a heavy 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League. Those results had increased pressure surrounding the club before the meeting with Chelsea. However, the board chose to continue with Carrick rather than make an immediate managerial change. The club's current league position means that the coming matches could be particularly important for Carrick as Manchester United attempt to end their winless run and move away from the relegation zone.

Ten Hag Reflects on His Manchester United Tenure

Ten Hag also reflected on his time at Manchester United, where he arrived in 2022 and remained in charge until his dismissal in 2024. During his tenure, he guided the club to victories in both the FA Cup and the League Cup. The Dutch manager pointed to the trophies won during his time at Old Trafford while discussing the club's position and recent struggles. He noted that Manchester United had gone six years without winning a trophy before his arrival and highlighted the achievements made during his managerial spell. Although his time at the club eventually ended, ten Hag's comments suggest that he believes the club's previous progress should also be considered when evaluating its current situation. Ten Hag was appointed technical director of FC Twente ahead of the 2026-27 season.

Manchester United's Upcoming Fixtures Could Prove Crucial

Manchester United now face a demanding schedule as they attempt to recover from their disappointing results. The club are scheduled to host AS Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday before travelling to face Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday. The upcoming fixtures could provide an opportunity for United to rebuild confidence and improve their performances. However, with the club sitting just above the relegation zone, the pressure surrounding every match is likely to remain intense. Manchester United will need to find a way to end their prolonged winless streak if they are to avoid becoming further involved in the relegation battle.
