The 2026 UK New Year Honours list celebrates over 1,157 exceptional individuals from politics, sports, arts, business, and community service. These honours range from Members and Officers of the Order of the British Empire to prestigious knighthoods and damehoods, recognizing outstanding contributions across the nation.
Among the standout recipients is celebrated actor Idris Elba, who was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his dedicated campaigning against knife crime among young people. Elba’s commitment to community safety has earned widespread admiration, reflecting the honours list’s focus on impactful social work.
Iconic ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, famous for their perfect-scoring Bolero routine at the 1984 Winter Olympics, also received top honours. Torvill was made a dame, while Dean was knighted, paying tribute to their enduring legacy in British sport and culture.
Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch coach behind the England women’s national soccer team’s consecutive European Championship titles, was awarded an honorary damehood. This rare distinction highlights her role in elevating women’s soccer in the UK. Several key Lionesses players were also recognized for their contributions.
The entertainment industry saw notable honours as well. Cynthia Erivo, the multi-award-winning actor renowned for her lead role in the 2024 musical film Wicked, received an Order of the British Empire. Warwick Davis, famed for his roles in Star Wars and Harry Potter, and founder of the charity Little People UK, was also awarded an OBE.
Acclaimed actor and writer Meera Syal, whose work includes beloved TV shows and novels such as Goodness Gracious Me and Anita and Me, was made a dame, celebrating her cultural impact.
In the business sector, Simon Roberts, CEO of supermarket giant Sainsbury’s, and John Pettigrew, former chief executive of National Grid, were both honoured with Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for their leadership and service.
The New Year Honours, an annual tradition dating back to 1890, seek to recognize not only famous figures but also unsung heroes who have dedicated years to making a positive difference in their communities. Investiture ceremonies to present these awards will take place throughout 2026 at royal residences including Buckingham Palace.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer praised the list, stating it “celebrates the very best of Britain – people who put the common good ahead of themselves to strengthen communities and change lives.”
