A mild earthquake registering 3.6 on the Richter scale struck Assam’s Dima Hasao district on Wednesday afternoon, as per seismic records. The tremor occurred at 12:40 pm IST, with an origin about 30 kilometers beneath the surface. The epicenter was pinpointed at latitude 25.19° N and longitude 92.92° E, situated in a remote hilly area.
Initial assessments from local authorities indicate that there have been no fatalities or physical damages reported thus far. Officials note that while residents felt the tremors, the impact was limited, likely due to the relatively shallow depth of the quake and its isolated location.
Assam is located in northeastern India, an area prone to minor and moderate seismic activities due to its proximity to several fault lines. Experts warn that even smaller seismic events highlight the region’s susceptibility to earthquakes and the importance of being prepared.
This tremor raises ongoing concerns about the resilience of infrastructure in remote, hilly communities, emphasizing the critical need for early warning systems and stringent construction standards to mitigate risks. Local disaster management teams are on alert to ensure no damages have gone unnoticed.
Residents in Dima Hasao district are advised to stay vigilant and report any signs of structural damage in homes and public buildings. A detailed evaluation by geological and seismic specialists is anticipated in the forthcoming days.
