On Friday morning, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit Bangladesh, resulting in minor tremors felt across eastern India. The quake struck at 10:08 am IST, with its epicenter located approximately 14 kilometers from Narsingdi, and about 10 kilometers east-southeast of Dhaka.
Residents in Kolkata and surrounding areas reported the shaking ground, noting swaying fans and moving wall decor. In the wake of the quake, many people exited their homes and workplaces in astonishment, sharing videos and images of the tremors on social media platforms.
The tremors extended to other parts of West Bengal, including Dakshin Dinajpur, Uttar Dinajpur, and Cooch Behar, with light shaking also felt in Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Officials have confirmed that there are no immediate reports of injuries or damages.
Experts state that earthquakes in this area result from the interplay between the Indian tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate. This region, covering northern India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, is known for seismic activity, frequently experiencing moderate to severe earthquakes that resonate across borders.
Additionally, Pakistan experienced a separate earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale on Thursday, occurring at a shallow depth of 10 km. Such shallow quakes can be particularly damaging, as seismic waves reach the surface quickly, leading to increased ground shaking.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant for aftershocks and adhere to safety protocols should they experience further tremors. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as new information becomes available.
