Many assume that dining out means compromising on healthy eating, but experts suggest that’s not the case. With a few mindful choices, you can savor your dining experiences without derailing your fitness or weight loss plans. Nutritionist Remi Divine, based in New York City, has shared eight effective tips that can support healthy eating while enjoying meals at restaurants.
Remi emphasizes the significance of cooking methods. Opt for dishes that are grilled, baked, steamed, or broiled. These techniques generally involve less oil and are healthier options. Conversely, items labeled as fried, crispy, or creamy can pack in more fat and calories, making it crucial to choose wisely to avoid overeating.
It’s also wise to steer clear of sugary drinks. Beverages like soda or milkshakes often come with hidden calories that can sabotage your health goals. Instead, stick to water during your meal for hydration while minimizing extra calorie consumption.
Many restaurant meals are served with heavy sides like french fries. Instead, Remi recommends asking for a side salad or vegetables, which provide a lighter and more nutritious option that aids in feeling full without unnecessary fats.
Choosing a meal rich in protein is paramount. Opt for dishes featuring chicken, turkey, fish, or other lean proteins to help curb hunger for a longer period. Adequate protein intake is essential for strength and can help prevent overeating later.
Pay attention to sauces and dressings as well. Many contain added sugars, fats, or salts. Request these on the side to better control your intake.
Since carbohydrates often take center stage in meals, choosing whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and sweet potatoes is beneficial. These options provide steady energy and help avoid those sudden drops in sugar that lead to fatigue.
Restaurant portions can be larger than necessary, which often leads to overeating. To combat this, Remi suggests sharing meals or asking for half to be wrapped up to go, allowing you to enjoy the food while maintaining portion control.
Lastly, the pace at which you eat can influence your satiety. Eating slowly allows your body time to signal fullness, enhancing digestion and preventing overeating.
These insights reveal that healthy eating isn't about avoiding restaurants; it’s about making smart choices. With a bit of mindfulness and the right adjustments, you can enjoy dining out without sacrificing your health objectives.
