Abu Dhabi is taking a bold step into the future of food with a strategic partnership aimed at developing a protein fermentation ecosystem in the emirate. The collaboration between the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), The EVERY Company, and Vivici is set to transform the alternative protein landscape, introducing advanced biotechnology solutions that promise sustainability, efficiency, and global market reach.
Protein fermentation uses microorganisms to produce high-value proteins, providing a scalable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional animal-based sources. The partnership is exploring the construction of a 4-million-litre industrial-scale facility, designed to meet international standards in food safety and Halal certification, while also offering multi-tenant opportunities for other protein innovators.
The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s AgriFood Growth and Water Abundance (AGWA) cluster, which focuses on ensuring regional food security and addressing water scarcity through advanced technologies. With the global protein fermentation market projected to surge from US$3.03 billion in 2024 to US$54.04 billion by 2032, the emirate is positioning itself as a hub for sustainable food innovation.
The project will also help establish regulatory pathways for fermented proteins in the UAE, enabling smoother commercial approval for domestic and regional markets. Additionally, the partnership will explore export opportunities through the UAE’s Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPAs), creating access to high-growth markets across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Beyond production, the collaboration emphasizes talent development by engaging local universities, research centers, and training providers. This effort will cultivate a skilled workforce in biotechnology and food science, fostering knowledge exchange and positioning Abu Dhabi as a global player in next-generation food solutions.
Vivici and The EVERY Company bring proven expertise in precision fermentation and alternative proteins. Vivici has launched nature-identical whey protein and achieved self-affirmed GRAS status within its first year, while The EVERY Company holds a foundational patent for its precision-fermented egg protein, opening new possibilities in food and beverage innovation.
With this initiative, Abu Dhabi is not only strengthening its domestic food resilience but also setting a regional example of how science-driven industries can address global challenges while creating economic and technological opportunities.
