Massive Turnout for Ali Khamenei's Final Resting Place at Imam Reza Shrine

Massive Turnout for Ali Khamenei's Final Resting Place at Imam Reza Shrine

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In the sacred city of Mashhad, tens of thousands gathered to bid farewell to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Imam Reza Shrine, the pinnacle of religious significance for Shia Muslims in Iran. This somber occasion marked the conclusion of a week-long public mourning across several cities in Iran and Iraq.

As reported by Iran's state news outlet IRNA, the burial coincided with a rise in military clashes between Iran and the United States, raising alarms about the fragile status of a tentative agreement aimed at quelling the conflict that claimed Khamenei's life.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards Blame US for Military Strikes

On the day of the funeral, Iran's Revolutionary Guards accused the United States of targeting two railway bridges connecting Tehran and Mashhad. They contended that these strikes were an attempt to overshadow the mournful ceremonies.

These tensions resurfaced amid increasing hostilities following previous military exchanges between the two nations.

Ali Khamenei Killed in Israeli Assault

Ali Khamenei, along with his family members, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on February 28, marking the opening act of a new conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel.

His successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, has remained out of the public eye since the incident, which left him seriously injured, raising concerns over the leadership's stability.

Arrival of Coffins After Processions in Iraq

On Thursday morning, coffins carrying the remains of Ali Khamenei, his granddaughter, son-in-law, daughter, and Mojtaba Khamenei's wife were flown into Mashhad from Iraq.

Prior to their arrival in Iran, extensive funeral processions took place in Najaf and Karbala, where thousands turned out to offer their respects.

Funeral Procession Captivates Mashhad

Later that day, state television broadcasted visuals of throngs of mourners, clad in black, proceeding along a central boulevard in Mashhad.

Many waved Iranian flags and held red banners representing revenge, as well as portraits of Khamenei, alongside signs denouncing US President Donald Trump, who authorized the joint military strike that instigated the ongoing war.

Prominent slogans such as "We must rise" decorated the streets during the procession.

Hoda, a 35-year-old resident, expressed her grief, stating, "The leader's passing is a loss beyond that of a parent. Only the deaths of Trump and Netanyahu can alleviate our sorrow."

As darkness enveloped Mashhad, Khamenei's coffin was carefully transported through the masses on a lorry, making its way to the Imam Reza Shrine for burial.

Religious Significance of Imam Reza Shrine

The Imam Reza Shrine stands as a paramount site for Shia Muslims. Believed to house the remains of Imam Reza, the eighth Shia Imam, it draws millions of pilgrims annually and is famous for its golden dome and tall minarets.

Khamenei's Legacy and Leadership

Born in Mashhad, Khamenei ascended to the role of Supreme Leader in 1989 after Ayatollah Khomeini's passing. Over 37 years, he directed Iran's political framework with a firm grip, noted for his hardline stance, particularly concerning the West.

Funeral Displaying National Solidarity

In the wake of a devastating conflict that led to numerous casualties, Iranian officials orchestrated the funeral to reinforce national solidarity. However, this period of mourning was also marred by escalating tensions with the US.

Threats to Peace from US-Iran Clashes

President Trump cautioned of increasing military actions, underscoring a potential escalation after a series of strikes aimed at limiting Iran's military capabilities in strategic waters.

In retaliation, the Revolutionary Guards revealed their targeted strikes on US forces and infrastructure across the Gulf region.

Only weeks prior, Iran and the US had reached a preliminary understanding to resume peace talks and restore order, yet tensions escalated sharply during the mourning period. President Trump claimed this agreement was effectively null and void.
