A doctor from India has become the new president of the biggest group of doctors in America. This is a big deal because it’s the first time in 178 years that someone with Indian roots is leading this group.

Dr. Srinivas Mukkamala is the new president. He said, “It’s hard to explain how special this is. It’s really touching and amazing.” Many people at the event felt proud and inspired by him.

Dr. Mukkamala has faced a tough health challenge himself. Last year, doctors found a big tumor in his brain. He had surgery just three weeks later. The doctors were able to remove most of the tumor, which was a great result.

Dr. Mukkamala has always worked hard to help patients. Going through his own health scare made him even more determined to make the health system better and fairer for everyone. He knows he was lucky to get top treatment, but many people struggle with things like insurance, high medicine costs, and long waits to see a doctor.

He said, “We need doctors from every part of the country and every specialty to work together. Our health system needs strong, united leaders now more than ever.”

Recently, the group also made a new rule to help people learn about healthy eating. They want to teach everyone—especially doctors—about the difference between unhealthy, super-processed foods and healthy, natural foods. This way, doctors can help patients make better food choices.
