Apple has officially appointed Amar Subramanya as its Vice President of AI, indicating a transformative shift in the company’s approach to artificial intelligence. He takes over from John Giannandrea, who will remain as an adviser until his retirement next spring. This leadership change comes as Apple moves to align itself with competitors who are swiftly integrating generative AI into their consumer offerings.
The announcement was made via Apple’s internal channels and a blog post that emphasized Subramanya’s extensive experience in machine learning research and product application. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, reaffirmed that AI has always been integral to Apple’s philosophy, and stated that Amar’s addition bolsters Craig Federighi's leadership.
Hailing from India, Subramanya earned his engineering degree in electrical, electronics, and communications from Bangalore University in 2001 before embarking on his career at IBM as a software engineer. Following four years, he pursued a PhD at the University of Washington, during which he held an internship and visiting researcher position at Microsoft.
After completing his doctorate, he joined Google’s Mountain View office as a staff research scientist, steadily advancing through the ranks over eight years to become a principal engineer and eventually VP of Engineering in 2019. He managed engineering efforts for Google’s Gemini Assistant, one of its most publicly recognized AI solutions. Just this July, he briefly transitioned to Microsoft as Corporate Vice President of AI prior to being recruited by Apple.
At Apple, Subramanya will directly report to Software Chief Craig Federighi and oversee core components of Apple’s AI infrastructure, including foundational models, machine-learning research, search, knowledge systems, and AI frameworks.
This leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment for Apple. Under Giannandrea, the organization faced scrutiny for trailing behind rivals like Samsung, which launched generative AI features more rapidly and assertively. The expected “Apple Intelligence” enhancements for Siri are now postponed until 2026, raising both internal and public concerns about Apple’s velocity.
With Subramanya’s appointment, Apple signals a renewed commitment to advancing AI functionalities across its devices, a shift analysts deem highly necessary. The upcoming months are anticipated to reveal how swiftly Apple can turn this leadership transition into tangible improvements for consumers.
