American Music Awards kicked off in spectacular fashion in Las Vegas as indie artist Sombr and the hit song “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters secured some of the first major honors of the evening. The annual music awards ceremony, determined by fan votes, celebrated rising talent and global music popularity across multiple genres.
Twenty-year-old Sombr captured attention after winning the Best Rock/Alternative Song award for his emotional track “Back to Friends.” During his acceptance speech, the young musician reflected on writing the song alone in his bedroom while struggling emotionally as a teenager. His heartfelt words received loud applause from the audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Another standout moment came when “Golden,” the energetic soundtrack hit from Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, won Song of the Year. The victory surprised members associated with the fictional music group HUNTR/X featured in the animated film. Singer EJAE reacted emotionally on stage while thanking fans whose votes helped secure the major award.
The ceremony opened with a powerful performance by global K-pop sensation BTS, who appeared in matching black outfits and sunglasses while performing “Hooligan” during the Las Vegas stop of their Arirang Tour. The group’s appearance generated huge excitement among fans attending the event and viewers watching worldwide.
Host Queen Latifah energized the audience as she welcomed fans to the ceremony, praising the electrifying atmosphere inside the arena. The 2026 edition of the AMAs featured major performances, celebrity appearances, and highly competitive award categories involving some of the biggest names in global entertainment.
Pop superstar Taylor Swift entered the awards night with the highest number of nominations, leading the field with eight nods. Swift, already the most awarded artist in AMA history, competed for the prestigious Artist of the Year title against major international stars including Sabrina Carpenter, Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, and Lady Gaga.
Music analysts described this year’s ceremony as a reflection of the growing influence of streaming culture, fan-driven voting, and the global expansion of K-pop and independent music artists. The success of projects like KPop Demon Hunters also highlighted the increasing crossover between animation, streaming platforms, and mainstream music culture.
Fans around the world closely followed the live broadcast aired on CBS and Paramount+, with social media quickly flooded by clips of performances, celebrity reactions, and acceptance speeches. The American Music Awards continue to remain one of the entertainment industry’s biggest fan-driven global events.
