Low-intensity 3.9 magnitude earthquake shakes Assam near Udalguri

Low-intensity 3.9 magnitude earthquake shakes Assam near Udalguri

Post by : Meena Ariff

A light earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale was felt in Assam today, shaking the Udalguri district and its surrounding areas. The tremor occurred at exactly 12:20 PM local time, as confirmed by the National Center for Seismology. The epicenter was identified near Udalguri, a town located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River, an area known for occasional seismic activity due to its geological setting.

According to official data from the National Center for Seismology, the quake took place at 12:20:28 IST on Friday, with the epicenter positioned at latitude 26.78 degrees north and longitude 92.27 degrees east. The earthquake's focus was relatively shallow, occurring just 10 kilometers below the earth’s surface. Shallow earthquakes like this tend to be more easily felt by residents but often cause less severe damage compared to deeper or stronger tremors.

Local authorities and emergency services have reported no significant damage to buildings, infrastructure, or loss of life. Residents in Udalguri and nearby areas reported feeling a brief shaking, but there have been no immediate reports of panic or injuries. The earthquake appears to have been a minor event in terms of impact, but it serves as a reminder that Assam lies within a seismically active zone and is vulnerable to occasional quakes.

Assam and other parts of Northeast India lie in a complex tectonic region influenced by the collision of the Indian plate with the Eurasian plate. This collision creates stresses in the earth’s crust that occasionally lead to earthquakes, some of which have been historically more destructive. The region has experienced stronger earthquakes in the past, making ongoing monitoring and preparedness essential.

Seismologists continue to monitor the region closely for any aftershocks or related activity. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and follow safety guidelines to reduce risks during such natural events.

This recent quake, while mild, highlights the importance of earthquake awareness and the need for resilient infrastructure, especially in regions prone to seismic disturbances.
