On Sunday, the Atlanta Hawks delivered one of their most thrilling victories of the season by staging an incredible comeback against the Phoenix Suns. Trailing by 22 points in the fourth quarter, the Hawks showcased resilience, determination, and collaboration to secure a 124-122 victory in Phoenix. The nail-biting conclusion kept fans captivated right until the final buzzer.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker emerged as the standout player, amassing a total of 26 points, with an impressive 16 points scored in the fourth quarter alone. Each time the Hawks required a crucial basket, Alexander-Walker rose to the occasion with confidence, steering the team through adversity. His scoring prowess, composure, and leadership enabled Atlanta to maintain momentum even when the challenge seemed insurmountable.
Jalen Johnson also made significant contributions, netting 25 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, enhancing Atlanta's presence in the paint. Onyeka Okongwu equally shone with 27 points, making several pivotal plays in the closing minutes. Dyson Daniels facilitated the offense with astute passes, tallying 11 points and 12 assists, achieving a double-double. Collectively, their performances drove the Hawks to a five-game winning streak, concluding their Western road trip undefeated at 4-0.
On the other hand, the Suns were led by Dillon Brooks, who scored 34 points, while Devin Booker added 27 points. Collin Gillespie chipped in with 15 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Phoenix had hoped to extend their five-game winning streak and, for much of the game, appeared set for another victory.
Having ended the third quarter and begun the fourth with a dominating 28-4 scoring burst, the Suns established a commanding 97-77 lead. The margin grew even to 103-81 with about ten minutes to spare, leading many to believe the game was decided. However, the Hawks displayed unwavering spirit, gradually narrowing the gap.
One of the highlights came when the Hawks went on a staggering 20-0 run, tying the score at 107-106 with just over four minutes remaining. Despite Phoenix trying to regain their footing and momentarily stretching the lead to six, Atlanta remained unyielding in their pursuit.
As the clock dwindled, an alley-oop dunk from Okongwu put the Hawks ahead 117-116. Each possession became crucial. Following a series of exchanges, Johnson's free throws pushed the Hawks ahead by three, but Booker quickly responded. Okongwu's two free throws with just 10 seconds left provided Atlanta with crucial breathing space. Although Booker answered back, he made a tense jump ball with Okongwu during the inbounds. The Suns held onto a glimmer of hope until Alexander-Walker, fouled with 3.1 seconds remaining, sank one free throw to secure a two-point lead. Royce O'Neale's 60-foot attempt at the buzzer missed the mark, sealing the Hawks' thrilling comeback.
Regrettably, the Hawks faced a setback when Zaccharie Risacher sustained a left hip contusion after losing his balance following a dunk. He departed the game and did not return. Meanwhile, the Suns played without Grayson Allen, as the Hawks missed Kristaps Porzingis due to knee discomfort.
Ultimately, the Hawks' dominant fourth quarter, where they outscored the Suns 47-27, was crucial for their success. This victory epitomized resilience, teamwork, and belief—an unforgettable win for Atlanta.
