In the early hours of Wednesday, a catastrophic fire consumed Bakarganj Market in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, annihilating hundreds of shops and inflicting severe losses on local merchants. The fire erupted around 4 AM, producing thick clouds of smoke that raised alarms among residents and prompted emergency firefighting initiatives.
Witnesses reported rapid flames engulfing various stalls, prompting immediate alerts to the fire brigade. Despite multiple fire engines being dispatched, the fire's intensity and smoke made it difficult to contain, resulting in the loss of both temporary and permanent shops.
Footage from the scene depicted the market in flames as firefighters worked relentlessly to extinguish the inferno, while worried locals watched in despair. Investigations are underway to determine the fire's cause, which remains unknown.
This disaster follows a previous significant fire in Kanpur just a day before, at the Anandeshwar Cold Storage in Bara, which destroyed a substantial quantity of potatoes. Fire officials identified the lack of a rear exit as a significant obstacle to firefighting efforts in that incident.
Shopkeepers at Bakarganj Market expressed heartbreak over their lost businesses. Many approximated their total losses to be around ₹50-60 lakh. Shahzade, a shop owner, lamented, “A fire broke out here, but we don’t know how it happened. My cloth shop has been completely consumed.”
Usha Rathore, another trader, recounted, “We were alerted to the fire while sleeping. Initially, there was no fire brigade; we had to call for help ourselves. Everything is gone. My shop had merchandise valued at ₹13-14 lakh. I suspect foul play—it’s difficult to believe all shops could burn down so rapidly. I demand justice.”
Ajay, who owns two shops in the market, noted, “By the time I arrived, all the shops were already in flames. We had around ₹50-60 lakh worth of goods. Now, it’s all lost.”
Authorities have pledged to continue investigating the fire's origin and to assist those affected. Meanwhile, local residents are on high alert, wishing for swift measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
