A major road in Bangkok collapsed on Wednesday, creating a large sinkhole that disrupted traffic, damaged public infrastructure, and forced emergency evacuations in the surrounding area. The incident caused panic among motorists and residents, though no casualties were reported. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that three vehicles were damaged by the collapse, but all drivers and passengers managed to escape safely.
Authorities believe the collapse was linked to the ongoing construction of an underground train station in the area. Engineers and city officials are now investigating the exact cause of the road failure, which has sparked fresh concerns about construction safety and the city’s fragile infrastructure.
Videos taken at the moment of the collapse showed the ground slowly sinking, with the asphalt breaking apart and dragging down several electricity poles. Underground water pipes also burst, flooding parts of the road. Cars and motorcycles that were moving along the stretch quickly reversed as the sinkhole widened, eventually cutting off the entire four-lane road. The collapse extended dangerously close to a police station, exposing parts of its underground structure.
A nearby hospital announced that outpatient services would remain closed for two days. While city engineers confirmed that the hospital’s main building was not structurally affected, they ordered precautionary evacuations from the police station and other nearby buildings due to safety risks.
As a further precaution, officials cut electricity and water supplies in the affected zone to prevent accidents. Emergency crews have since cordoned off the area while repair teams work around the clock to stabilize the site.
Governor Chadchart emphasized that authorities are treating the situation with urgency. He warned that Bangkok’s ongoing monsoon season and the possibility of heavy rainfall could make the sinkhole expand or cause more damage if not repaired quickly. He assured the public that city teams are coordinating efforts to fill the hole and restore traffic flow as soon as possible.
The Bangkok road collapse has created significant traffic disruptions in one of the busiest parts of the city. It has also reignited public debate over the safety of large-scale infrastructure projects taking place in densely populated urban areas. For now, commuters have been advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes until the road is fully repaired.
