Actress Bhoomi Shetty has been confirmed to play the central role in Mahakali, a new film directed by Puja Kolluru. The picture is billed as a key addition to the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU), arriving after the success of Teja Sajja’s HanuMan.
The production team has released a first-look image of Shetty as Mahakali, showcasing a bold, transformed look that has already sparked interest among PVCU followers.
From Regional Roots to National Attention
Hailing from Kundapura in Karnataka, Bhoomi Shetty is the daughter of Bhaskar and Baby Shetty. She speaks Kannada and Tulu and has formal training in Yakshagana, the classical theatre tradition of Karnataka’s coast.
Shetty’s on-screen career began with the Kannada TV serial Kinnari, where she played the protagonist Mani. In 2018 she crossed over to Telugu television with Ninne Pelladatha, portraying the character Mrudula.
In 2019 she gained wider visibility as a competitor on Bigg Boss Kannada Season 7, hosted by Kichcha Sudeepa, finishing as the fourth runner-up and earning praise for her poise.
Transitioning from Television to Film
Following her TV success, Bhoomi made her Kannada film debut in Ikkat (2021), a comedy directed by Haseen Khan and Esham Khan, co-starring Nagabhushana. The title received warm audience response and is available on Amazon Prime Video.
She also made a brief appearance in the Telugu serial Attarintlo Akka Chellelu before entering Telugu cinema with Sharathulu Varthisthai opposite Chaitanya Rao Madadi. Though the film drew mixed reviews, critics noted Bhoomi’s strong screen presence and emotive work.
More recently, she portrayed Gauri—the spouse of Satyadev’s character—in Kingdom, directed by Gautam Tinnanuri and headlined by Vijay Deverakonda, delivering a subtle, affecting performance.
Mahakali: Expanding the PVCU
Mahakali advances Prasanth Varma’s effort to build a mythology-infused superhero franchise that began with HanuMan, reinterpreting Indian legends for contemporary cinema.
Puja Kolluru directs a script credited to Prasanth Varma and Vinay Kumar Vakkapatla. Sources say the story explores themes of feminine divinity, metamorphosis, and action-driven fantasy.
Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna has joined the cast in a key role, marking a notable addition to the PVCU ensemble. The film’s mix of mythic subject matter and a female lead has heightened anticipation for the project.
Implications for Bhoomi Shetty and the Franchise
Taking on Mahakali positions Bhoomi Shetty in a landmark part that could significantly raise her profile. The movie aims to celebrate divine strength and resilience while contributing to the broader PVCU narrative that blends mythology with modern blockbuster filmmaking.
As the franchise grows, Mahakali is expected to reinforce the PVCU’s standing for merging heroic storytelling with culturally rooted mythic themes.
