Shoppers Embrace Black Friday Spirit Despite Financial Woes

Shoppers Embrace Black Friday Spirit Despite Financial Woes

Post by : Meena Ariff

In the face of rising costs and layoffs, Black Friday drew enthusiastic crowds as the holiday shopping season kicked off. Many shoppers even enjoyed a glass of champagne while browsing for bargains.

At Lakeside Shopping Center, customers who spent over $50 could sip champagne while shopping. Lacie Lemoine, shopping with her grandmother, shared, “Sipping and shopping is the best. It’s a New Orleans tradition.” Her grandmother remarked, “The economy isn’t great, but we still need to celebrate within our means.”

Malls nationwide reported significant foot traffic, with the Mall of America in Minnesota and Westfield Garden State Plaza in New Jersey experiencing some of their busiest days. Some eager shoppers lined up for hours before stores opened to snag the best deals.

Experts noted that shoppers are more discerning this year, seeking out discounts while still splurging on special items. According to Matthew Shay, CEO of a national retail association, “Holidays represent a unique spending category. People save and strategize for these occasions.”

Despite economic challenges, shoppers like Denise Thevenot from Louisiana reported spending as they typically would. Notable retailers in New York and New Jersey, such as Target and Macy’s, drew large crowds with early bird gifts and generous discounts.

While in-person shopping thrived, online sales are on the rise, now making up over 30% of holiday transactions. From November 1–23, online expenditures reached $79.7 billion, with Thanksgiving Day alone generating $6.4 billion.

Economists indicate that while consumers are cautious, the appeal of Black Friday traditions remains strong as they embrace holiday shopping.
