Boca Juniors announced on Wednesday that their former coach Miguel Angel Russo has died at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer. Russo had been receiving care at home following multiple hospital stays in recent months and had stepped back from daily management duties due to his illness.
Despite his health challenges, Russo remained closely involved with the team, maintaining communication with his coaching staff and the club’s leadership. He enjoyed three separate tenures as Boca Juniors head coach, achieving notable success, including winning the Copa Libertadores in 2007, the Argentine league title in 2020, and leading the club at the Club World Cup earlier this year.
Beyond Argentina, Russo had an extensive coaching career internationally, managing clubs such as Universidad de Chile, Spain’s Salamanca, Mexico’s Morelia, Alianza Lima, Cerro Porteno, Millonarios, and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr.
As a player, Russo represented Estudiantes, making over 400 appearances and winning two national championships, cementing his legacy in Argentine football both on and off the pitch.
His passing is mourned by fans, players, and the global football community, remembering him as a dedicated coach and football legend.
