Brazil’s right-wing Liberal Party has accepted the outcome of the presidential election won by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, even as defeated candidate Flavio Bolsonaro continues to question the result. The development comes after US President Donald Trump described the election as appearing rigged, without presenting evidence to support the claim.
Valdemar Costa Neto, leader of the Liberal Party, said the party recognised the election outcome but wanted concerns raised during the voting process to be examined. His statement marked a shift from Bolsonaro’s earlier promise to seek the annulment of the result.
Lula defeated Flavio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s presidential run-off, securing a clear lead over the right-wing senator. However, Bolsonaro initially called the result unacceptable and said he intended to pursue legal action to challenge the election.
His main complaint focused on a decision to extend voting hours in some polling stations. Bolsonaro argued that the change affected the fairness of the election, while election-related discussions also involved concerns about severe weather and public transportation services.
The voting extension followed requests from both candidates’ campaigns, although they raised different concerns. Bolsonaro’s team pointed to heavy rain that made it difficult for some voters to reach polling stations, while Lula’s allies argued that reduced public transport in some cities could prevent people from voting.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin approved an extension that allowed polling stations that had not yet closed to remain open for additional time.
Bolsonaro criticised the decision, pointing to Zanin’s past professional relationship with Lula. The president had appointed Zanin to the Supreme Court after the judge previously served as his lawyer.
However, an analysis by Pedro Burgos, a professor at the Brazilian educational institute Insper, found that the extension produced a relatively small number of additional votes compared with the overall result. The estimated impact was far below Lula’s winning margin.
This assessment has raised doubts about claims that the extended voting hours could have changed the outcome. Bolsonaro’s allegations have not established that the election result was affected by widespread wrongdoing.
Trump added to the controversy by telling reporters that Brazil’s election appeared rigged. He argued that election results should be beyond dispute but stopped short of saying he would intervene on Bolsonaro’s behalf.
Trump also said he had not taken sides in the presidential race. His comments nevertheless gave international attention to Bolsonaro’s challenge and the dispute surrounding the result.
The remarks came amid previous disagreements between Trump and Lula. However, questioning the election does not by itself establish that voting irregularities changed the result.
Following the election, Bolsonaro said Brazil’s federal police had asked him to surrender his passports under an order linked to a Supreme Court decision. He said he would comply and had no plans to leave the country.
The development followed comments by his brother, Eduardo Bolsonaro, who had discussed the possibility of Flavio leaving Brazil if he lost the election. Eduardo cited investigations involving his brother as part of his concerns.
Flavio Bolsonaro rejected the suggestion that he intended to leave and said he would defend himself against what he described as an unjust decision. He has also presented himself as a leading figure in the opposition following his defeat.
Brazilian police are investigating Flavio Bolsonaro over alleged corruption connected to the financing of a biographical film about his father, Jair Bolsonaro. The investigation remains separate from the presidential election dispute.
Bolsonaro’s initial demand to annul the election has created uncertainty over whether he will continue challenging the result through the courts. Brazilian media have reported that legal advisers and political allies have urged him to abandon the effort, pointing to Lula’s winning margin and the acceptance of the result by election authorities.
The dispute has also revived concerns about whether the defeated candidate will accept the democratic process. His father, Jair Bolsonaro, challenged the outcome of the previous presidential election and faced legal proceedings over efforts to overturn the result. He is currently serving a prison sentence linked to a coup plot.
Flavio Bolsonaro and his family have criticised the legal cases involving the elder Bolsonaro, describing them as political persecution.

The Liberal Party’s acceptance of the election result may help reduce uncertainty, although Bolsonaro’s own position remains important to the political situation. His next steps could determine whether the dispute continues through legal channels or shifts toward opposition politics.
For now, Lula’s victory remains the recognised election outcome, while allegations of irregularities continue to be debated. Claims that the vote was rigged have not been supported by evidence showing that the reported voting extension changed the result.
