Elena Rybakina has returned to winning ways at a crucial point in the tennis season, retaining the Ningbo Open title with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Leylah Fernandez. The win gives the world number one fresh confidence ahead of her WTA Finals title defence. The Kazakh star’s success in Ningbo is particularly significant because last year’s victory at the same tournament helped turn her season around. She later qualified for the season-ending championship and won it without losing a match.
Rybakina’s latest triumph marks her fourth title of the year and the 15th singles title of her career. She has also enjoyed major success at Grand Slam level, winning the Australian Open in January and claiming another major crown at the US Open last month. The 27-year-old has improved her record in finals considerably. After losing nine of her first 13 finals, she has now won 11 of her last 15, showing greater composure during important moments.
Rybakina’s Ningbo Open victory comes after a difficult spell that included an early defeat in Beijing following her rise to world number one and an injury-related absence from Wuhan. She said Ningbo holds a special place in her career because her strong performances there last year helped build momentum for the months that followed. She hopes the latest win will provide similar motivation for the remainder of this season and the next.

Rybakina is scheduled to compete at the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo before heading to the WTA Finals, scheduled for November 8 to 15 in Indian Wells. She will aim to defend the title she won unbeaten last year. Her latest victory has strengthened her confidence, but the challenge ahead remains demanding as the season’s leading players prepare for the final major event of the WTA calendar.
