Dubai: The Burj Al Arab, an emblematic luxury hotel, is set to commence its first extensive restoration since it opened doors in 1999. This announcement, made by Jumeirah Group on April 15, marks an important milestone for the hotel, which has stood for 27 years.
Renowned for its sail-like architecture, the hotel will undergo a meticulously planned phased refurbishment, expected to unfold over roughly 18 months.
Restoration with a Focus on Heritage
Jumeirah Group emphasizes that the restoration will maintain the hotel’s unique character while modernizing essential interior areas. This careful approach likens the restoration process to that of a priceless artwork, emphasizing precision, craftsmanship, and respect for its original architectural style.
Thomas B. Meier, CEO of Jumeirah Group, remarked that this project opens a new chapter for the iconic establishment, ensuring it will reflect excellence and prestige for generations to come.
Upgrading Interiors Without Sacrificing Charm
The renovations will refresh the interiors while preserving the luxurious features that characterize the hotel. Since its inauguration, Burj Al Arab has been celebrated for its extravagant design, highlighted by marble finishes, gold leaf accents, and Swarovski crystal designs.
This all-suite hotel consists of 198 duplex suites and rises to 321 metres on a man-made island off Dubai’s coast, making it a favored subject for photographers globally.
Tristan Auer at the Helm
Renowned interior architect Tristan Auer, celebrated for his restoration work on prestigious properties like the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris, will spearhead the project. His involvement follows a stringent selection process.
Auer expressed that managing the restoration of such an iconic establishment is both an honor and a duty, underscoring his commitment to upholding its heritage while integrating contemporary elements.
Dubai's Skyline to Remain Unchanged
Throughout the restoration, Burj Al Arab will continue to be a defining feature of Dubai’s skyline. The phased strategy aims to reduce disruption and uphold the hotel's international allure.
