Francesco Calzona has announced his resignation as the head coach of the Slovakia national football team, following unsuccessful negotiations for a contract extension, thus marking the conclusion of a period characterized by significant achievements and improvements.
The Slovak Football Association confirmed the news, revealing that attempts to secure a new deal fell short of a consensus. Calzona's contract expired on March 31, and although an offer for a two-year extension was made, both parties couldn't finalize the terms, especially regarding the length of potential collaboration.
Taking over in August 2022, Calzona, who previously managed SSC Napoli, played a pivotal role in enhancing Slovakia's performance on the international scene. A standout moment during his coaching era was the memorable 2-0 win against Germany in World Cup qualifying, showcasing the team’s improved capabilities under his guidance.
Also, under the leadership of the 57-year-old coach, Slovakia made commendable strides in the UEFA Euro 2024 event held in Germany, reaching the round of 16 and nearly advancing to the quarterfinals, which would have marked a historic milestone for the nation. However, their journey concluded in a tight 2-1 defeat after extra time to the England national football team.
Calzona's last match as coach was a friendly against Romania, concluded with a 2-0 victory, providing a positive closure despite the contract impasse. His tenure is viewed as a phase of solid advancement, during which Slovakia fortified its standing within European football and demonstrated the capacity to hold its own against more formidable rivals.
With his departure, Slovakia now faces the task of finding a new head coach to build on the recent successes and gear up for future international contests.
