Typhoon Matmo Alerts China: Residents Urged to Prepare for Floods

Typhoon Matmo Alerts China: Residents Urged to Prepare for Floods

Post by : Rameen Ariff

China has issued warnings as Typhoon Matmo, the 21st storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season, heads toward the southern provinces of Guangdong and Hainan. The Ministry of Emergency Management has declared a Level-IV flood and typhoon response to protect residents and tourists during the national holiday.

Local authorities are taking precautionary steps, including monitoring rivers, strengthening flood defenses, and preparing urban areas for possible waterlogging. Officials are advising both residents and holiday travelers to prioritize safety amid heavy travel across the country.

The National Meteorological Centre issued a yellow alert, predicting that Matmo will make landfall between Wanning in Hainan and Dianbai in Guangdong on Sunday. Strong winds are expected to affect the Bashi Channel, parts of the South China Sea, and coastal regions of Guangdong, southern Taiwan, and eastern Hainan from Friday night through Saturday night.

China’s emergency system has four levels, with Level I being the most severe. Weather warnings also range from blue, yellow, orange, to red, with red representing the highest threat. The current yellow alert signals a need for heightened caution without reaching the most extreme warning.

Authorities are urging residents to stay updated through official channels, avoid travel in flood-prone areas, and secure their property as Typhoon Matmo approaches, ensuring public safety remains a priority.
