China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, has asked the United States (US) to adopt a fair, practical, and respectful attitude towards China. He said this would help both countries build a better and more peaceful relationship in the future.

Where Did He Say This?

Wang Yi made these remarks during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and other related meetings held recently.

What Did They Discuss?

Both leaders talked about China-US relations and other important topics that matter to both countries. Wang Yi clearly explained China’s main ideas and expectations for improving relations with the US.

He said that both countries should turn their top leaders’ agreements into real actions and policies. Wang Yi explained:

“We hope the US will look at China in an objective and fair way. Both countries should aim for peaceful coexistence and mutual benefits. They must treat each other with equality and respect to build a strong and positive relationship for this new era.”

How Was The Meeting?

The statement from China noted that both sides felt the meeting was positive, practical, and helpful. They agreed to:

  • Strengthen diplomatic channels
  • Communicate better at all levels
  • Use diplomatic efforts to improve ties

Manage differences calmly

  • Find new ways to cooperate in the future
  • Wang Yi’s Message at the East Asia Summit
  • Besides his meeting with the US Secretary of State, Wang Yi also spoke at the 15th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.

There, he shared three main proposals for East Asian countries:

  • Return to dialogue – Solve problems by talking to each other peacefully.
  • Focus on development – Work together to improve their countries’ economies and the lives of their people.
  • Remain open to cooperation – Do not isolate themselves but continue working with other countries.

He also supported adopting a special declaration for the summit’s 20th anniversary, which would set the direction for future development in East Asia.

Warning Against Protectionism

Wang Yi warned that protectionism and doing things alone are dangerous for the region. He said East Asia has been successful because of open regional cooperation. He added:

“China supports ASEAN-led cooperation. We want to protect fair trade, build a strong regional free trade network, and promote better regional integration.”

What Does This Mean?

This means China wants to work closely with its neighbours and the US. China wants to:

  • Keep peace and stability in the region
  • Improve economic ties with the US
  • Ensure fair and equal treatment for all countries
  • Solve differences through dialogue, not fights

Why Is This Important?

The relationship between China and the US affects the entire world. If both countries work together peacefully and respect each other, it can bring more development, stability, and better opportunities not only for their people but also for many other countries that depend on their trade and support.
