Unveiling the Health Risks of Morning Tea Habits

For many tea lovers, mornings often begin with that essential cup of tea. Whether it's in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the UAE, or the UK, this morning ritual is cherished. Yet, health professionals caution that certain morning tea habits could be detrimental to your well-being.

This guide outlines commonly overlooked tea practices, their potential health impacts, and ways to refine your tea enjoyment for better health.

1. Drinking Tea on an Empty Stomach

Many reach for tea first thing in the morning. However, this can trigger several issues.

Why this might be unwise:

  • Increases stomach acidity

  • Can lead to nausea or discomfort

  • Irritates stomach lining

  • Hinders iron absorption

The caffeine and tannins in tea heighten acid production, leading to irritation when on an empty stomach.

Healthier choice:
Start your day with warm water. Enjoy tea after having a light bite such as fruits or nuts.

2. Excessive Sugar Usage

Many add excessive sugar to their tea, sometimes two teaspoons or more per cup, which quickly adds up.

Potential issues with high sugar:

  • Promotes weight gain

  • Increases diabetes risk

  • Leads to energy fluctuations

  • Impacts heart health

Suggested alternative:
Gradually cut back on sugar or experiment with honey or jaggery.

3. Over-Boiling Tea Leaves

Some believe longer boiling times yield stronger tea, but this can diminish health benefits.

Consequences of over-boiling:

  • Tea may taste bitter

  • Antioxidants can be destroyed

  • Increased caffeine levels may cause headaches

Recommended method:
Boil water first, then add tea leaves and simmer for 1–2 minutes.

4. Excessive Milk Addition

While a creamy tea is beloved by many, too much milk can negate tea's health benefits.

Reasons to limit milk:

  • Reduces antioxidant absorption

  • May cause bloating if lactose intolerant

  • Makes tea heavier on the stomach

Better option:
Use a smaller amount of milk or explore alternatives like black or green tea.

5. Too Many Cups Too Soon

Consuming multiple cups of tea in quick succession can be harmful.

Health risks include:

  • Dehydration from excessive caffeine

  • Increased acidity

  • Potential anxiety or restlessness

  • Disrupted energy levels

Healthier approach:
Limit yourself to one cup in the morning; enjoy more later in the day.

6. Skipping Breakfast for Tea

Replacing breakfast with just tea is unequivocally unhealthy.

The drawbacks:

  • Leads to lower blood sugar levels

  • Causes fatigue and irritability

  • Encourages overeating later

  • Slows metabolism

Preferred choice:
Eat a light breakfast like fruits, oats, or eggs before or alongside your tea.

7. Drinking Tea While Extremely Hot

Sipping on extremely hot tea can be harmful.

Possible harms:

  • Can irritate the throat

  • Risk of burns to the mouth or throat

  • Potential long-term esophageal issues

Healthier method:
Allow your tea to cool slightly before enjoying.

8. Low-Quality Tea Leaves

Inexpensive tea powders may contain harmful additives.

Risks include:

  • Unsafe additives

  • Inferior caffeine quality

  • Chemical residues

Optimal choice:
Choose high-quality loose tea leaves or reputable tea brands.

9. Overdoing Spices in the Morning

While masala chai can be delightful, heavy spices in the morning can upset your stomach.

Possible complications:

  • Heartburn

  • Bloating and gas

  • Stomach discomfort

Better choice:
Use mild spices, or save masala tea for later in the day.

10. Neglecting Water Around Tea Time

Tea acts as a natural diuretic, increasing urination and risk of dehydration.

Signs of dehydration:

  • Headaches

  • Fatigue

  • Dry skin

  • Issues with concentration

Healthier choice:
Stay hydrated by drinking water before or after your tea.

Enjoying Tea the Healthier Way

Implement these simple tips for a healthier tea experience:

  • Start with warm water

  • Have a light snack before tea

  • Use less sugar

  • Avoid over-boiling tea

  • Let tea cool before drinking

  • Opt for quality tea leaves

  • Limit to 1–2 cups daily

With these adjustments, you can savor your tea without compromising your health.

Morning tea is an integral part of many lives, but certain practices—like drinking it on an empty stomach or over-sweetening—can undermine digestive health. By making minor changes, you can still indulge in your favorite beverage while promoting better well-being.
