A heated debate erupted Thursday in the Ontario legislature as Premier Doug Ford's administration faced scrutiny regarding its commitment to education. Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser urged Ford to support a $1 billion boost in education funding and to recruit 10,000 additional support staff to enhance school environments. Ford attributed the existing challenges to previous Liberal administrations, citing the closure of around 600 schools and subsequent teacher layoffs—a remark he later retracted amid backlash.
Post-debate, Fraser labeled Ford’s statements as “wacko,” insisting they reflect a disconnect from the pressing issues confronting schools. Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner added his critique, denouncing Ford’s characterization of teachers as “left-wing extremists” and arguing such rhetoric only exacerbates divisions rather than solving educational challenges.
Concerns from parents at Heydon Park Secondary School, which caters to students with special needs, intensified the conversation. Attendees of the debate sought clarity regarding the pause on admissions for Grades 9 and 10, fearing that dwindling enrollment and vague communications might lead to the school's closure. Some parents highlighted low EQAO test scores for special needs students, suggesting a more robust support system is needed instead of cutbacks.
NDP Finance Critic Jessica Bell emphasized the significance of specialized institutions like Heydon Park, arguing they require consistent government backing to ensure student success. In response, Government House Leader Steve Clark indicated that the government's strategies are aimed at providing parents, students, and educators with necessary resources.
Education Minister Paul Calandra admitted that EQAO results have fallen short and announced the addition of two new members to an advisory board in the upcoming year to evaluate Ontario’s standardized testing framework and propose necessary improvements.
