During the first day of the third Ashes Test at Adelaide Oval, a significant DRS blunder occurred when Alex Carey managed to evade a vital caught-behind appeal due to a technological malfunction.
Carey was on 72 runs when a delivery from England's Josh Tongue grazed his bat, expected to be caught by Jamie Smith. The on-field umpire dismissed the appeal, and despite using the Decision Review System (DRS), the decision stood.
Although the Snicko technology indicated a faint edge, it misaligned with the ball’s trajectory past the bat, allowing Carey to continue playing and eventually score 106 runs before his dismissal later in the match.
Todd Greenberg, Cricket Australia's chief, described the incident as “unacceptable,” pointing out errors in both umpiring and the technology itself. He stated that they are seeking explanations from the technology suppliers to prevent future occurrences.
The Snicko team admitted to the oversight, clarifying that the wrong microphone was utilized for audio analysis, leading to the confusion. England lost their review in the process, but match officials reaffirmed the initial decision.
Earlier, Australia scored 371 runs after winning the toss and opting to bat. With victories in Perth and Brisbane, they now boast a 2-0 lead in the Ashes series.
