Crosby Moves Closer to Penguins Record with Stellar Play Against Flyers

Crosby Moves Closer to Penguins Record with Stellar Play Against Flyers

Post by : Meena Ariff

Sidney Crosby is on the verge of a significant achievement with the Pittsburgh Penguins, just seven points shy of surpassing Mario Lemieux for the highest regular-season points in franchise history. Currently, Crosby boasts an impressive record of combined regular and post-season points for the Penguins.

During Monday's matchup, Crosby scored his 58th and 59th career goals against the Philadelphia Flyers, leading the Penguins to a 5-1 triumph. His performance against Philly remains unparalleled, accumulating 59 goals and 137 points in 92 games—setting a record for the most points by any player against the Flyers.

“I know [Lemieux] is aware enough to know it’s not a topic I wish to dwell on,” Crosby commented regarding the prospect of breaking the record. “I just want to play. Whatever happens, happens.”

At 38, Crosby has reached a total of 1,716 career points, closing in on Lemieux’s 1,723. He has also guided the Penguins to three Stanley Cup championships under Lemieux’s ownership in 2009, 2016, and 2017.

Crosby’s historic performance against the Flyers was marked by his 60th career road game-opening goal, complemented by a power play wrist shot in the second period. This victory put an end to Philadelphia's three-game win streak and allowed Pittsburgh to recover from a previous 7-2 defeat to Toronto.

Despite a shaky start to the season, where the Penguins encountered seven losses across nine games in November, Crosby remains pivotal in Pittsburgh's efforts in the Metropolitan Division. With both teams tied at 31 points, Crosby’s expertise continues to be vital for maintaining competitiveness.

“His exceptional nature shines through; he’s never content,” stated teammate Bryan Rust, who tallied a goal and two assists during the match. “It actually fuels his desire for more.”

Crosby’s pursuit of the NHL scoring title is further igniting fan enthusiasm and ensures the Penguins have a distinctive advantage in every contest.
