Heart disease remains a major cause of mortality globally. Often, conditions like these develop subtly over time, with individuals experiencing no noticeable symptoms until complications arise. This makes early testing and periodic check-ups crucial, particularly for those over 40.
Cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty emphasizes that comprehending heart health before starting aggressive treatments is vital. Simple and non-invasive exams can clarify whether the heart functions optimally or if any artery is beginning to show signs of blockage. Early detection can avert significant health challenges later.
Here are the three essential tests that medical professionals typically recommend for evaluating heart health:
1. Electrocardiogram (ECG)
An ECG is a straightforward assessment that captures the electrical activity of the heart. Adhesive pads are affixed to the chest, arms, and legs while the equipment registers heartbeats.
This test aids doctors in diagnosing conditions, such as an irregular heartbeat or indications of past cardiac issues, and it requires no special preparatory steps.
2. Echocardiogram (ECHO)
An ECHO uses ultrasound technology to visualize the heart’s structure. Sound waves generate a dynamic representation of the heart, showcasing its blood-pumping efficiency and the functionality of its valves.
This examination can reveal if the heart muscle is unusually weak or thickened, thereby providing clearer insights into its shape, size, and overall function.
3. Cardiac CT Angiogram and Calcium Score
These imaging procedures give healthcare providers a glimpse into the arteries supplying the heart. They determine if there is any cholesterol or calcium accumulation within the blood vessels.
A CT Angiogram can identify narrowing arteries, which poses a risk for heart attacks, while a calcium score assesses the plaque buildup in the arteries.
Healthcare professionals stress that maintaining regular tests, a balanced diet, exercise, and refraining from smoking are all effective measures in minimizing the risk of heart disease. Post 40, it’s advisable to undertake these examinations even without symptoms to safeguard heart health.
