A man from Texas is facing arrest after reportedly driving his Tesla Cybertruck into Grapevine Lake in an attempt to test the vehicle's “Wade Mode” functionality.
The incident unfolded at the Katie’s Woods Boat Ramp, where authorities received notifications about a vehicle partially submerged in the water. Upon arrival, officers found the Cybertruck stranded near the bank after it failed to reemerge.
According to the Grapevine Police Department, the individual, identified as Jimmy Jack McDaniel, admitted to intentionally driving into the lake to assess the water navigation capabilities of the Cybertruck's Wade Mode.
Wade Mode is engineered by Tesla to enable the Cybertruck to traverse shallow water, mud, and challenging terrains by modifying ride height and vehicle settings; however, it is only suitable for limited depths.
The vehicle reportedly became inoperable in the water, began taking on water, and prompted a response from emergency teams. Firefighters from the Grapevine Fire Department assisted in the recovery process, and a tow truck later extracted the vehicle from the lake.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident.
McDaniel is now facing several charges, including operating a vehicle in a restricted park area, failing to have valid boat registration, and breaching water safety regulations.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with the misapplication of off-road vehicle features like Tesla’s Wade Mode, which is expressly designed for shallow water conditions and responsible usage.
