KYIV — An aggressive wave of Russian drone and missile attacks targeted Kyiv early Friday, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and injuring over 26, according to Ukrainian authorities. Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko described the strikes as “massive,” with explosions causing significant damage to residential buildings, hospitals, schools, and government offices across the city.
This onslaught disrupted essential services, leaving parts of Kyiv's heating and energy systems compromised, particularly affecting northeastern neighborhoods. Emergency responders worked tirelessly overnight, rescuing more than 40 individuals trapped amidst the rubble and fires, including 14 from a residential complex in the Desnayanskyi area where one fatality occurred.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, advised residents to seek shelter shortly after midnight, remarking on Telegram, “it's loud in Kyiv.” Medical teams were deployed to all impacted areas, treating nine individuals, with one in critical care.
Ukraine’s air force reported additional drone and bomb attacks in various regions, including Sumy. This escalation of violence occurred just days after a preceding Russian offensive claimed six lives and inflicted damage on vital energy services, underscoring a troubling pattern in the ongoing conflict.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry claimed to have intercepted or downed 216 Ukrainian drones aimed at its industrial sites, asserting that its strikes on energy infrastructure are intended to diminish Ukraine’s military strength.
The relentless assaults on civilian facilities have escalated calls from Ukrainian leaders for tighter sanctions on Russian energy exports. President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western nations to impose sanctions “without exceptions,” highlighting the strategic significance of targeting energy resources in Russia’s military strategy.
As Kyiv works to recover from the recent onslaught, officials advised residents to remain alert while emergency teams attempt to restore services and clear away debris. This latest wave underscores the continuous threat Russian drone and missile strikes pose to the safety of Ukraine's civilian population and critical infrastructure.
