A heartbreaking chapter closed in Delhi on Tuesday as 80-year-old Radhe Shyam Aggarwal passed away at a hospital in Saket, days after eight members of his family were killed in a devastating hotel fire in Malviya Nagar. His death means that no immediate member of the Aggarwal family remains alive, turning an already unimaginable tragedy into one of the most devastating family losses reported in recent years.
The elderly patriarch had been undergoing treatment at a hospital for a respiratory illness when the fire broke out at a nearby bed-and-breakfast accommodation where his family had been staying. The family had chosen to stay close to the hospital so they could care for him more easily and avoid the long daily commute from their residence in Gurugram.
Among those who lost their lives in the blaze were his son Vivek Aggarwal, wife Prem Lata Aggarwal, daughter-in-law Tarjani Aggarwal, granddaughters Jivisha and Varya, along with three other relatives. The family had gathered in Delhi primarily to support the ailing patriarch during his treatment.
According to relatives, Radhe Shyam Aggarwal remained unaware of the tragedy that had unfolded just a short distance from the hospital. During his final days, he reportedly continued asking about the whereabouts of his family members, not knowing that they had all perished in the fire.
One of the most emotional aspects of the tragedy involved his granddaughter Jivisha, an engineering student from Bengaluru, who had travelled to Delhi specifically to spend time with her grandfather. Family members recalled that the elderly man had proudly told hospital staff that his granddaughter had come from another city to see him during his illness.
The fire not only claimed multiple lives but also erased an entire family household. The Aggarwal residence in Gurugram now stands empty, a painful reminder of a family that was once filled with life, memories, and togetherness. The loss has left distant relatives and friends struggling to come to terms with the scale of the tragedy.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the hotel fire. Meanwhile, the deaths of nine members of a single family within a week have shocked the nation and highlighted the devastating consequences that can arise from a single disaster. For those who knew the Aggarwal family, the tragedy leaves behind an irreplaceable void and memories that will endure long after the headlines fade.
