Dick Cheney, Former US Vice President, Dies at 84 After Health Complications

Dick Cheney, Former US Vice President, Dies at 84 After Health Complications

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Dick Cheney, who served as vice president of the United States, has died at the age of 84 from complications linked to pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, the family announced on Tuesday.

The Cheney family said in a statement that his wife Lynne, daughters Liz and Mary and other close relatives were at his side when he passed away.

For more than four decades, Cheney was a dominant presence in American public life. He was vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures to hold that office, particularly in shaping post-9/11 foreign and defence policy.

Prior to the vice presidency, Cheney was Secretary of Defense in the administration of President George H. W. Bush from 1989 to 1993, overseeing the US-led coalition in the Gulf War. He also represented Wyoming in Congress and held senior posts across several Republican administrations.

His years in Washington were marked by decisive policy leadership as well as controversy, notably over his support for the Iraq War and strong counterterrorism measures. Critics faulted his approaches, while supporters praised his strategic focus on national security.

Cheney faced longstanding health problems, including multiple heart attacks that culminated in the placement of a cardiac device in 2012. In his memoir, In My Time, he reflected openly on his medical struggles and his decades of public service.

His daughter Liz Cheney, a former congresswoman, has become a prominent political voice in recent years, known for defending democratic principles and criticizing former President Donald Trump.

The family asked for privacy as they mourn and said that details about funeral arrangements will be provided at a later time.
